On Global Accessibility Awareness Day, we’re reflecting on intersectionality between being LGBTQ+ and having disabilities

As the internet grows ever more important for obtaining information and how we live most of our lives in the modern era, the need for accessible, inclusive  digital spaces has become increasingly apparent and necessary.

Global Accessibility Awareness Day (May 16) is a global occasion to shine a light on digital accessibility and inclusion  – not just for people with an impairment or disability, but for people of all identities, including the LGBTQ+ community. As Avanade celebrates this important day of significance, two employee networks – DiversAbility and Prism – have come together to recognize the importance of inclusion and accessibility, and how their identities and experiences highlight the work that must be done to continue fostering accessible  digital and physical spaces.

As an inclusive design enthusiast and LGBTQ+ ally, I have witnessed firsthand the barriers faced by individuals with disabilities, spanning mobility, visual, hearing or cognitive challenges, which can vary from situational, temporal, and permanent. That is why an event like Global Accessibility Awareness Day holds immense importance for me. This event not only raises awareness but also focuses on transforming digital access and inclusion for the more than one billion people worldwide who live with disabilities.

I understand how certain groups, such as the LGBTQ+ community, often face discrimination and additional barriers while dealing with their health conditions or impairments. Given that the LGBTQ+ community heavily relies on the internet for entertainment and seeking help and support, it is crucial to prioritize accessibility in our digital spaces to meet their needs. This may involve simple adjustments like adding sign language interpretation or captions to online streaming services, designing websites with neurodivergent users in mind, and creating user interfaces that authentically represent their identities. As PRIDE month approaches, it is essential that our celebrations welcome everyone.

I encourage you to further champion inclusion by staying informed and engaged. You can do this by participating in events like Global Accessibility Awareness Day (GAAD), consulting international internet content guidelines such as the WCAG, and actively engaging with your community to better understand how to support their needs. Together, there's always more we can do to ensure accessibility and inclusivity for everyone.

Audrey Gerred – representing Prism Employee Network

I have ADHD (and anxiety and depression). I am a proud neurodivergent. I am also a proud ally to the LGBTQ+ community and an even prouder mom to my amazing bisexual, non-binary daughter (she/they). Both communities stand out for their unique experiences and shared resilience. Our identities and struggles may appear distinct, but there are striking similarities that bind us together.

Both communities face daily challenges that often lack visible markers– you cannot just look at me and see that I am neurospicy anymore than you could look at my daughter and see that she is part of the LGBTQ+ community. For LGBTQ+ individuals, societal norms have long dictated the binary understanding of gender and sexuality (even though spectrums and non-binaries exist all around us). They must navigate coming out, battling discrimination and seeking affirmation. Similarly, neurodivergent individuals struggle with their minds operating outside of what is considered typical, which leads to unique perspectives and challenges with daily tasks.

Resilience blooms and flourishes where societal norms fail to confine. Both communities can find freedom in expressing their true selves and living authentically   even when it means defying societal expectations. Our shared courage our 'audacity' to be different fuels our resilience. In the everyday battles that we fight, from advocating for gender-affirming healthcare or challenging stereotypes, we exemplify strength and courage. Our resilience is not in any sort of visible armor. Rather, it is in the unwavering determination to not only survive but thrive despite adversity.
