A day of service: Highlighting the intersection of tech and community

Part of my role is managing Avanade’s relationship with clients, and I have been working with and for the Federal Home Loan Bank of Chicago (FHLBank Chicago) for more than 20 years. Over those two decades, our conversations with FHLBank Chicago have always been at the crossroads of technology and client-centricity. Last year, we started building an even stronger relationship by incorporating joint days of service.

As part of this journey, on this day of service, I stood shoulder-to-shoulder with volunteers from FHLBank Chicago to support interns from I.C. Stars and students from the University of Illinois Chicago ready to dive into a day that promised both learning and impact as we helped participants on their career journeys.

The day kicked off with a panel discussion featuring senior leaders from both companies, who shared insights about the personal and professional challenges they faced to become who they are today. I think all participants showed that a career journey is not linear but rather a journey that requires evolution and embracing change. Through demos and presentations covering generative AI, agile frameworks and data analytics, we stepped into the world of business shaped by artificial intelligence and technology.

Our conversation extended far beyond the future of work. We also delved into Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI), and how more diverse workplaces offer potential for innovation and progress. During the working lunch, we dissected workplace dynamics. Perspectives intersected, and the fresh outlook of the event’s participants – our future leaders – comingled with that of the present-day leaders. We talked about glass ceilings, allyship, and the power of representation. In that room, I felt the pulse of progress.

During the breaks I had a chance to speak with other volunteers. I felt inspired when Toi Fields, SVP, Head of IT Business Management at FHLBank Chicago said, “I hope to impact communities through the day of service by reminding our young leaders that we need them just as much as they need us. Through this experience, I’m hopeful that when we reach one student, they go back and talk to others. That helps us to keep that wheel of service going and inspire the next generation.”

And I could not agree more with my co-worker Lily Carmody, Group Manager, Avanade Tech Advisory, when she expressed her thoughts: “Our enduring partnership with FHLBank Chicago extends beyond business. I am proud that I am part of creating genuine human impact within the community. Together, we encourage and empower communities to learn more about technology and take bold steps in their future careers.“

Speaking to the participants from I.C. Stars and University of Illinois College, it was very satisfying to hear that the day’s events went beyond their expectations. They learned valuable career skills with sessions on topics like elevator pitches and agile workflow.

Most importantly, participants were happy to be part of a human-to-human connection. At the end of the day, I knew our day of service wasn’t just about skills or résumé bullets. It was about connections forged beyond cubicles, business units and organizations that transcend beyond us. I felt proud as a volunteer stepping out of my role and bridging gaps. Together, Avanade and FHLBank Chicago amplified our social impact – creating a ripple effect that will touch lives far beyond our daily business. I can’t wait to see how we continue to do what matters for the next generation of business and technology leaders.
